Out of the parking lot, follow the trail for Buck Mountain.  At 4/10th of a mile you will reach Butternut Brook as it crosses the trail.  Here is where the adventure begins.

Over the next mile, you will be off-trail and parts of it get a little dicey and may not even be possible for most people in high water. Fortunately, on this trip the water levels were low and I was able to navigate the rocky and steep terrain with many fallen trees by crossing the brook several times and walking up the bed of the brook.

Although the brook runs between the Buck Mountain Trail and the Inman Pond Trail, much of this part of the hike is in a ravine with steep hills on both sides so access to get to those trails is not very reasonable.  With that in mind, when you reach Butternut Brook, pick a side to start on and start heading up stream.

You will hike approximately a half mile up stream before reaching the first waterfall, a ten foot cascade into a pool.

Butternut Brook empties into Lake George.  The flow then goes north through LaChute, Lake Champlain and then through Canada on the Richelieu River.  It eventually empties into the St. Lawrence River.
