Directions
At the intersection of NY 5 and NY 50 in Scotia, drive
north on NY 50 for about 6.0 miles. Take a right on
Paradowski Road. If you cross the bridge over the
Alplaus Kill, you've gone too far! The falls will
be on the left just past the end of Tryon Street.

We have indicated this viewing point for Krystal
Falls because it is public. In reality, between late spring
and summer, the foliage will obscure decent views of the waterfall
and photo opportunities are even more limited, as the first shot
in the array shows. At this point, the creek and falls are
in a valley and you are high above them. The is an opening
in the trees that is clear to the bottom, but it is an area of run-off
and will probably be wet and slippery most of the time. With
no posted signs in the area, it is accessible, but most people wouldn't
consider this simply because of the terrain. Agile people
with ropes and other climbing gear could probably make the trip.
A more favorable alternative is to drive back down to NY 50, take
a right and cross the creek. Just past the bridge, there is
a road leading into a parking lot of a restaurant. Over the
years, it has been operated under a variety of names, but in 2013,
it was the Pig and Whistle. At the back of the parking lot,
there is an area that looks like it might be used for pig roasts
or other outdoor events. There is a deck area near the shore
overlooking the falls, complete with tables and chairs.
For those traveling and looking for waterfalls, this might be
a nice stop on a warm summer day. Although we didn't ask,
it would stand to reason that your meal could be served on the deck.
You can enjoy a meal and the waterfall all at once. While
we were there, we happened to catch a heron enjoying the area on
the other side of the creek from here.
The Alplaus Kill empties into
the Mohawk River just east of Scotia. This flows to the Hudson
River before reaching the Atlantic Ocean in New York City.
