At the point noted in the directions box, there is a NYS DEC
sign mounted on a tree. There is also a yellow blaze on it. However, do not follow
the blazes. Instead, walk a few dozen yards, bear left and
listen for the water. You will locate this falls in less than
250 feet.
We estimate that this waterfall drops about
ten feet, in three sections. The top is a very small drop. The
creek then makes a sharp right and slides twenty feet or so
before making a sharp left. In another twenty feet, there are
two quick steps of about two-and-a-half feet each. This all
takes place over what appears to be a huge boulder.
There
are a number of other falls downstream of this one. These
may require some exploring to find. The trailheads for
these are even more obscure than the one you take for this
waterfall. Foliage along the stream is quite dense but you
should be able to work your way down along the waterway to find
three or four other drops.
This waterway enters Twitchell Creek roughly 1000' below
this drop. In turn, Twitchell Creek flows into
the Beaver River at Stillwater Reservoir. The Beaver
continues into the Black River, which empties into Lake Ontario
at the Black River Bay, just southwest of the village of Dexter.
