Talcott Falls is
certainly one of, if not the most popular waterfall in
Jefferson County, New York. Downstream of it, depending
upon who is counting, there are eight smaller drops.
The first six are discussed in this entry. We were very fortunate to meet the owner of this property in
2022. Literally hundreds of acres of land in this region
were parts of two farms that have been family operated for
several generations, one dating back to the mid-1800s. At
some point, members of these two families married and the
current owner is descended from that union.
The land is posted so please enjoy the videos and pictures
that we have provided. There is a video and a picture of
each of the six drops. We have numbered them from top
down.
Talcott First Lower Falls ... this step cascade drops about
eight to ten feet in five drops. The first drop is the
largest at approximately four feet.
Talcott Second Lower Falls ... another step cascade, this one
drops about 25 feet. As our picture and video shows, there
is a total of four sections. The first section is a narrow
ten foot drop. The channel then widens at the second
section which is a gradual series of steps of another ten feet.
A few feet later there is a two-step three foot drop. The
last descent is only a couple feet or so before the channel
levels out somewhat.
Talcott Third Lower Falls ... this series of steps drops
about five feet through a bed of gradual stair-steps. From
here, the creek widens somewhat and flows level for a while
before the next descent.
Talcott Fourth Lower Falls ... this twelve to fifteen foot
step cascade drops into a little pool before the creek takes a
fairly sharp turn to the left. At that point, there is a
gentle slide to the next section of the creek. The first
four "falls" have been relatively close together. At this
point, it is a few hundred feet before the next drop. In
this section, the creek breaks off into a number of channels
around several little "islands". Having said that, during
heavy spring flow, these "islands" are probably underwater and
unrecognizable.
Talcott Fifth Lower Falls ... keeping with the step cascade
theme, gentle stair-steps descend about five or six feet into a
pool. Twenty or so feet further down the channel there are
two minor steps of a couple of feet.
Talcott Sixth Lower Falls ... this drop is about the same
height as the previous one but is spread out over a longer
section of the stream bed. As the photo and videos show,
the water drops about three foot or so, levels out and then a
ledge of a foot or so rounds out the descent.
For those keeping score, these
six drops do not total the
104' we have noted in the data side-bar. The rest of the
elevation drop is made up through incidental drops in the
remainder of the quarter mile or so portion of this creek.
