On a stretch of the Oswegatchie River near the Edwards/Fine
town line and between the South Edwards Dam and Grease Falls, there
are six drops.
The property around this drop is private so it is a water access only
situation.
This drop is about 1.5 mile upstream from the canoe launch.
Our research has shown that locally, this drop has been known as
Rock Dam or Rock Dam Falls. Since this is the third of the
drops you encounter from the canoe launch, it could also be
called Oswegatchie River Falls #3. It
should not be confused with Oswegatchie Falls, which is about
2.4 miles downstream from this location.
In addition to the main drop here, the river separates into
two channels around an island. The river left side is a
slide with a bottom drop of eight to ten feet. This is
seen in the second picture in the array.
You will pass Oswegatchie River Falls #1 and 2, as well as a stretch
of rapids on the paddle to this one. These will have to be
portaged.
As a result of our Waterfall
Naming Project, Rock Dam Falls was added to the Geographic
Names Information System data base on April 19, 2019.
The Oswegatchie River flows to the St. Lawrence River in the
city of Ogdensburg.
