South Edwards Quadrangle

On a stretch of the Oswegatchie River near the Edwards/Fine town line and between the South Edwards Dam and Grease Falls, there are six drops.

The property around this drop is private so it is a water access only situation.

This drop is a little over 1.6 miles upstream from the canoe launch.  It is about 250 yards above Falls #3.  In keeping with our policy of giving names to these unnamed falls based on the waterway they are on, and since this is the fifth of the drops you encounter from the canoe launch, but one of them is commonly named, we have chosen this name.  It should not be confused with Oswegatchie Falls, which is about 2.5 miles downstream from this location.

The channel divides around an island.  River right is pictured in the first photo.  Because of the terrain, the river left section was not able to be photographed.  The second picture shows where it exits around the island.  We have recently added a third picture.  Another contributor has sent in a photo of this section during high water in the spring.  This shows an interesting contrast in how the water flow affects the appearance of some of these falls.

You will pass Oswegatchie River Falls #1, #2, Rock Dam Falls, Oswegatchie River Falls #3 and a couple of stretches of rapids on the paddle to this one.  These will have to be portaged.

The Oswegatchie River flows to the St. Lawrence River in the city of Ogdensburg.
