There are two waterfalls and a small dam in the
Indian Kill Nature Preserve. At the edge of the parking lot,
there is a kiosk with information and a map of the preserve.
We would recommend that you
download a map prior to a visit here.
They have not always been available at the kiosk when we have
been there.
From the parking area, you walk on what is known as the Claire
Schmitt or Red Trail. A little over 100 yards from the trailhead,
you will come to the Indian Kill Dam. At that point you cross
a footbridge and continue to the waterfalls.
Follow the red trail markers. The Third Falls will be
the first waterfall you reach. Please note that there are
some inaccuracies in the map you download because of some
changes that have recently occurred. We do not know when
or if these changes will be rectified. As you get closer
to the Third Falls, the upper portion of the trail has been
closed. You will have to cross the stream to continue and,
assuming normal waterflow, you will get wet if you are wearing
normal hiking footwear. Rubber thigh high or knee high
boots will protect you.
Once you reach the other side, you will encounter posted
signs on the river bank. However, there are also red trail
markers continuing so we assume there is some type of easement
or other agreement allowing passage. Keep following the
trail and you will come to Third Falls.
Another waterfall, Second
Falls, is another 1/4 mile beyond this point.
The Indian Kill flows into the Alplaus Kill, which empties into
the Mohawk River just east of Scotia. This flows to the Hudson
River before reaching the Atlantic ocean in New York City.
