Hague Quadrangle

Hague FallsFrom the parking area, there is a footbridge over the brook that leads to a trail to a point where there is a bird's eye view of the waterfall.  The area is very well maintained.  We also took a stroll up the side of the highway to get some pictures from a different perspective.  We urge you to use caution if you do that.  The road at this point forms some "S" curves between the hills on one side and the valley of the brook on the other.  The shoulder is not very wide and there is significant traffic especially during the tourist season.  You are, however, able to cross the guard rails and descend to the stream level.  At this point, you are almost within sight of the north end of Lake George.  It is a very popular and beautiful area.

The main waterfall is about 20'.  From the pool below it, the brook flows about 100' to a series of small drops toward the parking area below.

The history of this waterfall is somewhat interesting, if not curious.  We first became aware of it from an old postcard in the collection of falzguy.com.  Printed on the face of the card is "Millbrook Falls Hague on Lake George NY".  We contacted town officials in Hague.  After doing some research on their end, they got back to us with the information that no one there had ever heard of Millbrook Falls.  A comparison of the image on the post card with the waterfall by the town hall did substantiate that they are, in fact, one and the same.  A town historian did provide information that the Hague Brook was formerly known as Sucker Creek and that a mill once was located there.

Given the fact that this old postcard is printed Millbrook Falls, it must have been commonly known as that at some point in the past.  Today, that name has fallen out of use.  Simply referred to locally as Hague Falls, they are not even indicated on topographical maps.

The Hague Brook flows into Lake George almost within sight of this location.  This drains through LaChute to join Lake Champlain.
