This waterfall
should not be confused with Hague Falls, which is a short distance
downstream of this location in the hamlet of Hague. In fact, you will see
Hague Falls as you go by
it on the way to Hague Brook Falls. A bridge on NY 8 crosses
the Hague Brook in front of the Green Acres Campground. The
only parking available here is on the shoulder of the road.
This waterfall is not named, nor is it indicated on topographical
maps. Although it is literally under the bridge, it is tucked
out of sight and has somewhat taken a back-seat to the waterfall downstream. Due to its location, we are calling
it Hague Brook Falls.
The waterfall is two-part. From the highway, looking upstream,
you can see the upper section a few hundred feet away. They
appear to be 8 or 10 feet high. It would appear that this
property is owned by the campground. Both times we have
been there it has been during the off-season and no one was
around so we took our pictures from the road.
The lower section is on the other side of the road.
You can get down the bank on either side of the stream but your best bet is to climb down the rocks on the river-left side.
Better photo ops are available on this side. We did not see any signs
in the area indicating that it was private land. In fact,
there was heavy evidence at the location that a disrespectful
public may use the area frequently. This section of the
waterfall is right next to the road, but it is in a natural
setting. There are no fences or handrails, so use caution
while there.
This small brook babbles down over rocks to the road and goes
under the bridge. As the water exits under the bridge, the
brook takes a sharp turn to the right and goes between the base
of the concrete bridge abutment and a huge rock on the shore.
After a few feet it take a plunge of about 15 feet into a very small
pool and then another, almost immediate drop into a gorge.
The bottom of the gorge is estimated to be 35 feet from the level
of the brook where it exits perpendicular from the highway.
You can get over the guardrails on the downstream side of the bridge
on either side of the brook to see this.
The Hague Brook flows into Lake George almost within sight of
this location. This drains through LaChute to join Lake Champlain.
