Directions
From the village of Canton, proceed on Park Street out
beyond the St. Lawrence University campus. This becomes
CR 25. At the first stop sign, take a right on CR
27. The first paved intersection is just past a car
dealership. This is CR 1 where you should take a right.
Not long after the road takes a sharp turn to the left,
you will see a penstock on the right. The waterfall
area is behind this.

We know that there is a waterfall directly below the
Pyrites Dam. We have been told
for some time of the existence of another waterfall in this area
downstream of that. Based on a number of things, we believe
that there is a bigger waterfall only about 300 yards upstream from
where these pictures were taken.
Contour maps of the area show a drop of 25 to 35 feet over a
span of about 90 feet in that area. This would seem to indicate
that there is some kind of waterfall activity there. The problem
is that all of the land on both sides of the river here is privately
owned. on the east side it is all National Grid Power Company
property, which is posted. The other side of the river
is private homes.
This road is now known as CR 21 Extension. There is a penstock
here, as well as a building of some sort which may be a power station.
The river flows around a point of land at this point and there is
about a two foot drop followed about 20 feet later with another
drop of a foot or so.
If anyone has any information about the waterfall upstream of
this point, we would be very interested in
hearing from you.
The Grass River flows into the St. Lawrence River in Massena,
in St. Lawrence County.
Note: Depending upon which map or sign you are using, this
river is referred to as either Grasse or Grass.
Officially, it is Grass.
