For several years, we have had a page on this website dedicated
to Bakers Falls in Oneida County. This waterfall is very well known to New
York State waterfallers, both in name and location.
In April 2020, we received an email from a landowner in
this area asking for help sorting through a situation. He
had read a number of historical documents about Bakers Falls and
felt that they desribed a waterfall on his property. After
further research, we
tend to agree.
The historical document in his
possession, as well as those we have read, place Bakers Falls at
about two miles south of Boonville. His property is in
fact, two miles from Boonville, whereas the Bakers Falls we have
recognized is almost four miles from that village. This is
not the only argument favoring his property.
We theorize
that, over the years, the name Bakers Falls has come to identify
this more southerly location, perhaps due to its more easily,
and publically, accessible location. Rather than
disrupting things as we know them, and try to rename the Bakers
Falls we know, we have opted to identify this "new" location as
Old Bakers Falls. We have described Old Bakers Falls as being
on the Old Black River Canal. In fact, it is on an unnamed
stream that is formed by a spillway from the canal.
We were able to visit the location in September or 2021, but
it was not flowing at that time. We will go back next
spring. More information will be posted as we get it.
We have spoken with a number of people about this situation
and as yet have not made any concrete conclusions about the two
locations. If anyone reading this has any knowledge that
can help make a determination,
please contact us.
The Old Black River Canal continues for about two miles where
it joins Lansing Kill, just below the other Bakers Falls.
Lansing Kill flows into the Mohawk River which empties
into the Hudson River before reaching the Atlantic Ocean.
