Little Black Creek Falls

Directions

From the intersection of NY 12 and NY 28 in Alder Creek, drive northeast on NY 28 to Forestport.  After crossing the Forestport Reservoir, take a right on the exit ramp.  Continue to merge on the Woodhull Road.  As you go through Forestport Station, take a right on the Bardwell Mills Road.  You will come to a corner where the Bardwell Mills Road exits right, but you should continue straight and you will be on the Lake Julia Road.  In a little over 1/2 mile, turn left on the Muthig Road.  This becomes the Roberts Road.  You will come to a DEC sign for the Little Black Creek Fishing Access Area.

Forestport Quadrangle

Little Black Creek FallsPark in the lot on the left.  The waterfall will be obvious on the upstream side of the bridge as you pass.  We have previously listed this location as public.  We have just received information that, although this is a DEC facility, the waterfall itself is on private land.  Our apologies to the landowner.  Please honor their rights and stay within the highway right-of-way.  In this case, there is no need to stray from the highway because the falls can be clearly viewed from the road.

This is a DEC fishing access site and as such, fishing is allowed on the creek.  This is not an uncommon situation in New York.  The DEC has agreements and regulations covering many streams.  On designated waterways, fishing is allowed and fisher-people are permitted to walk the shores in that endeavor.  However, this agreement doesn't extend to any other purpose.

This is a step type waterfall with the first drop being a six to eight foot plunge around a boulder in the river.  After about 30 or so feet, there is another small drop just before the bridge.  Then a set of rapids takes things home as it flows away from the bridge.

The Little Black Creek flows into the Black River less than two miles downstream from here.  That empties into Lake Ontario at the Black River Bay, just southwest of the village of Dexter in Jefferson County.
