Ticondaroga Quadrangle

B Mill Dam FallsThe La Chute River serves as the outlet from Lake George to Lake Champlain.  It is entirely contained within the town of Ticondaroga.  Depending upon the source, or where you start and end your measurement, it is only three to four miles long.  You can pull off the road here into a grassy field on the east side of the road here.  This particular drop is the second from the top on the channel.

A number of dams have been constructed over the years through this stretch.  At most of them, there is still a waterfall below the dam.  Some of these still involve active hydro-electric plants.  The International Paper Company at one time ran a number of mills located at the sites of dams and falls along this stretch of the LaChute River.  The dam at this location was known as the B Mill Dam, leading to its common name.  Only a portion of that dam remains.  It has either been knocked down or has deteriorated over time.

The falls here is a series of three steps, each classical cascades.  The top two are fairly significant whereas the bottom drop is relatively small.  The first four pictures in our array show the top two drops.  The last two photos are of the lower section.

La Chute is the outlet of Lake George and empties into Lake Champlain.
