Santanoni Peak Quadrangle

This is an officially named stretch of rapids on the Cold River, east of the north end of Long Lake.

West of the hamlet of Newcomb, there is a road that heads north to Arbutus Pond.  The roads leading into this area are labeled on maps as private and signs at the intersection of NY 28N indicate that they are private.  There are also a number of posted signs on both sides of the road at this point.  This stretch is extremely remote but it is probably within sight of the Northville Placid Trail. This would be a significant hike but could be done.  We are continuing to research this.

If anyone has pictures or information on this area, please contact us.  The only image we have is from bingmaps.com.  It shows the region identified on topographical maps but doesn't clearly show the section of rapids.

The Cold River flows into the Raquette River just north of Long Lake.  The Raquette River empties into the St. Lawrence River in Massena, New York.

Note:  To avoid confusion ... there is also a stretch of rapids in Hamilton County called Big Eddy.
